The deer watching is amazing right now. The fawns are big enough to run with their mothers, and the bucks have full antlers. Those of us in Northwest Austin who are lucky enough to see deer all have our favorites. When I see my little flock on the way to work in the morning, it makes my day!
Because it is mating season, the deer are especially active and, as a result, they can get into a little deer trouble. One of our DeerAustin friends reported a deer caught in a wrought iron fence at Adirondack and Steck on November 3rd (Thanks, Deb!). Several caring neighbors were trying to help the deer. Animal control was called but was very slow to respond. We have not heard the outcome so if you have, please let us know.
If you find a deer caught in a fence, call Preston at Wildlife Rescue. His direct number is 913-9090. The number for Wildlife Rescue is 472-9453. You can find it on the web at www.austinwildliferescue.org. The Wildlife Rescue answering system will also give you Preston's number.
Here is some additional information that might be helpful:
For injured deer or to report illegal hunting, call the Game Warden at 389-4848. Austin 311 can also route you to the Game Warden.
For dead deer pickup, call Austin 311. Be prepared to give the operator an address or otherwise be able to describe the location of the deer.
Always remember to walk dogs on leashes, and drive the speed limit or less when deer are present.
