Please sign our petition. For those who haven't yet seen it, the text reads: "We, the undersigned, oppose (1) deer killing/harvesting in the City of Austin and (2) the use of City funds for deer killing." As of Saturday, February 19, we have MORE than 500 signatures, with approximately 300 from the 78731 and 78759 ZIP codes. Thank you, all! Keep up the good work!

About DeerAustin.org

The organizers of this site are neighbors who live in the 78731 zip code in Austin, TX. We have joined together to oppose any and all deer harvesting and trap-and-kill procedures in our neighborhood and city.

We invite you to read our posts, learn about living in Austin with white-tailed deer and speak out against the needless killing of wild animals.

Thanks for visiting this site. We're glad you're here.

Results of NWACA Ballot PDF Print E-mail

By now many of you have heard the results of the NWACA “deer reduction” proposal.  While the results are disappointing, they must be kept in perspective.  First, the wording on the ballot was drafted to lead a reader to vote “yes” for acting “safely and humanely.”  Second, while we will probably never know the actual numbers, it appears that 177 ballots voted “yes.”

Meanwhile, DeerAustin has 420 signatures and counting!  We have demonstrated once again that NWACA does not represent this neighborhood or the City of Austin.  Keep up the good work DeerAustin!  We will keep working to preserve the deer, save our tax dollars from waste, and retain the unique character of the Northwest Hills neighborhood and Austin’s place as a leader in animal and human rights.

See you at Doss on February 17th!

Here is a list of questions suggested by a group of approximately 20 area neighbors at a DeerAustin meeting held on January 15, 2011. We will direct these questions to Plateau, who conducted the deer survey, as well as to City staffers at the Thursday, January 20, public meeting, to be held at 6 p.m. at Doss Elementary cafeteria/auditorium. The debate over deer population is starting to get visual after a group opposed to reduction methods, goes grassroots. You'll see the signs in the Northwest Hills area, asking others to vote "no" on the Northwest Austin Civic Association's proposal to the city to reduce deer numbers – possibly, by sharpshooters. Organizers say they’re already garnering a lot of support. See full story here.

DeerAustin, a group of Austin neighbors opposed to lethal deer harvesting, has launched an awareness campaign against a measure devised by the Northwest Austin Civic Association (NWACA) to promote city-funded deer removal. Using tools that include petitions and yard signs, DeerAustin plans to expose NWACA’s selective and secretive ballot measure and at the same time increase awareness about non-lethal methods of deer management.
